SG Hambros eyes West country expansion

SG Hambros, part of SG Private Banking, is eyeing UK regional expansion in the West Midlands to tap the burgeoning wealthy classes in the region.

The bank, owned by Société Générale of France, yesterday acquired Dutch bank ABN Amro's private banking operations in Gibraltar, following the acquisition of ABN's London private banking office in December.

Eric Barnett, SG Hambros group head of private banking told Wealth Bulletin that the bank would continue to expand in the UK in the future, and believes there are some great opportunities in the West.

The bank is considering areas like Manchester, Bristol and Birmingham as potential sites for expanding its footprint.

SG Hambros currently has trust offices in London, Jersey, Guernsey, the Bahamas, and Gibraltar, and regional offices in Cambridge, Milton Keynes and Leeds.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
