HSBC private banking head considers Swiss private bank acquisition

Alexandre Zeller, head of HSBC Private Bank in Switzerland, said his bank might be interested in acquiring a Swiss bank.

He was cited in the Swiss magazine Bilan as saying: “The position we are in allows us to consider all options. Bank prices have fallen quite a bit from the peaks reached in the last few years.”

When asked by the magazine about whether his bank might be interested in UBS, he said: “I cannot possibly comment on the group's intention…”

Brummel

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
