Dutch private bank lures away anxious clients from rivals

Van Lanschot is attracting customers from rivals due to the credit crunch as they look for certainty for their savings, Floris Deckers, the Dutch private bank’s chief executive, said, according to a report in The Guardian, London.

"At this moment I only hear that people want certainty. The big question is not 'return on your money' but 'return of your money'," Deckers was quoted as saying in an interview to Reuters, cited in The Guardian report.

Van Lanschot said second-half income was likely to decline compared to the corresponding period last year amid lower transaction fees.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
