Capricorn rules the City, Aries lowers its horns

The majority of successful financial workers in the City of London are Capricorns, a star sign renowned for its ambition and discipline, while less than half as many are stubborn Aries, according to a new survey.

In a survey of over 300 high net worth City workers, 12% were found to be Capricorn, the goat-fish, and 11% were Taurus, the bull. Capricorns are associated with various traits that give it a good business sense, including practicality, organisation, prudence, reliability and seriousness.

Taureans, born in April or May, share Capricorns' self-discipline, and are hard-working, loyal and patient.

Only 5% of respondents were born under Aries, the ram. Their absence from the City could be something to do with the sign's fiery nature, which can lend itself to impulsiveness, irritability, and being over-opinionated.

The survey was carried out by boutique wealth manager The Route City Wealth Club.

Mark Worrall, managing director of The Route City Wealth Club, said: “Many hard nosed analytical City workers will dismiss astrology, but there is clearly a significant difference between the number of Capricorns and Aries working in the City. Whether you believe in astrology or not, there is clearly no substitution for hard work and ambition."

In order of prevalence in the City, zodiac signs are as follows: Capricorn, 12%, Taurus, 11%, Pisces, 10%, Gemini, 9%, Sagittarius, 9%, Leo, 8%, Cancer, 8%, Aquarius, 8%, Virgo, 7%, Scorpio, 6%, Libra, 6%, Aries, 5%.

The prevalence of star signs on the Sunday Times Rich List, released earlier this year, tells a slightly different story.

Taurus was the top richest sign, with 107 out of 1056 respondents being born under the sign of the bull. Aries came in fourth, with 95 respondents. Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who is second on the rich list with a fortune of £11.7bn, is an Aries. Sir Alan Sugar, 92nd on the rich list with £832m to his name, is also born under the sign of the ram.

Capricorns were fifth richest on the Sunday Times Rich List. Scorpio was the least affluent sign. The world's richest man, steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal who has a net worth of £27bn, is a Gemini.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
