Abramovich quits as Russia governor

Roman Abramovich, the Russian billionaire, has quit as governor of the far eastern region of Chukotka, Russia, a role which he had taken on as part of a deal with former President Putin.

The owner of Chelsea football club was elected as governor in 2000 as part of a contract with Putin to take on some civic responsibility after earning millions in the commodities boom of the 1990s, according to Reuters.

He attempted to stand down in 2006 from his role as governor but Putin insisted he stay.

The decision does not mean he is cutting his links with Russia, said Abramovich's spokesman, Jonathan Mann.

Abramovich is ranked Russia's second richest man in the Forbes Rich List with an estimated fortune of $23bn.
