Diary: Utopia for Yacht Lovers

Looking to get more from your yacht? Why not share it with others?

Launching in January, UtopiaExchange.co.uk is an online club that allows members to trade the time when they aren't using assets as a way of realising additional value. In return they earn virtual currency they can then use to buy access to the assets of fellow members.

Its co-founder Giles Adams says: "By letting others use your asset's downtime, you then gain access to a new world of fabulous assets without having to pay in full for the pleasure."

The members-only community already has a number of people offering downtime on assets such as boats, winter chalets, sports cars, exotic holiday homes and experiences like fishing and shoots.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
