Aubrey McClendon Unloads More Wine

I thought Aubrey McClendon (left) might be done liquidating his collection of liquids.

After all, the Chesapeake Energy CEO sold caseloads of wine this spring through Sotheby’s.

That was followed by his now-famous sale of his antique map collection to his company (ie shareholders) for $12 million and his $100 million payday.

Apparently, Mr. McClendon is still unloading his cellar. Spectrum Wine Auctions, a new live and online auction house of fine collectible wine, has announced “The Aubrey McClendon Collection” sale on Nov. 21 at The St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort in Dana Point, Calif. It will be simulcast in Hong Kong, since that is where the blow-out wine sales are happening these days.

The news release calls Mr. McClendon “the greatest wine American wine collector”–a claim that might spark an interesting debate with Bill Koch.

Mr. McClendon will be selling off many of the usual blue chips of red wine–1945 Chateau Latour, 1982 Chateau Lafite Rothschild, 1959 Petrus and Jeroboams of Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The estimate for the auction, which will include 5,500 bottles, is $3 million.

But that’s not all! Bidders will also get to watch a video interview with Mr. McClendon talking about his philosophies and interests as a collector.

One question that probably won’t be asked: Why does he continue to sell so much wine?

UPDATE: Through a spokesman, Mr. McClendon emailed me an answer my above question: “100,000 bottles is a bit too much for him.”

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
