Annie Lennox SINGS for her supper

Annie Lennox, one half of 1980s band Eurhythmics, heckled London mayor Boris Johnson from the stage at last night’s Fortune Forum dinner to advance social change.

“So what is the deal with swine flu Boris? Is it getting worse, is it getting better?” she asked at the gathering of the UK’s wealthiest philanthropists including actor Sir Ben Kingsley and well known UK entrepreneur James Caan.

“Less severe than we thought!” he bellowed back.

But Lennox had a serious message. She was there to raise awareness about her SING campaign which she established two years ago for HIV and AIDS affected women and children in Africa.

She set up the charity after hearing Nelson Mandela describe the African HIV pandemic as a genocide at the concert for his 46664 HIV campaign in 2003.

To date, she has raised around €600,000 through various fundraising campaigns since she founded the charity in 2007.

Other speakers at the dinner included comedienne Ruby Wax, who spoke about giving to neuro-sciences, Boris Johnson and Sir Trevor Chinn, chairman, The Mayors Fund for London, who spoke about the need for support for disadvantaged children and families in London and Sir Nicholas Young, CEO of The British Red Cross.

Dame Stephanie "Steve" Shirley, UK ambassador for philanthropy, who has given more than £50m over the past seven years to non-profit organisations, also urged attendees to give generously to charity.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
