Gates Foundation seeks Europe growth with hire

The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation has appointed a European head as a newly created position, as the charity seeks to grow its European presence.

Joe Cerrell starts as head of the European office in London in January 2010. He is currently the foundation's director of global health policy and advocacy.

"Expanding our work in Europe is an important priority for the foundation, and we're very pleased that Joe will be leading this effort," said Bill Gates, co-chair of the Gates Foundation.

Cerrell has worked at the Gates Foundation since 2001 and was previously assistant press secretary to former US vice president Al Gore where he worked on energy and environmental issues.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
