Ireland’s very rich are all self-made
Ireland’s 500 richest tycoons are nearly all self-made, with only 10, or 2%, inheriting their wealth, according to a report by DKM Economic Consultants.
That compares with 18% of the worldwide rich who inherited their wealth.
The country’s 500 wealthiest individuals are worth €67bn and around two-fifths made their fortunes in the construction industry or through property deals. Around 50 are still involved in running at least one of the businesses that gave them their fortune, the report said.
DKM Economic Consultants added that the fortunes of many of the country’s super-rich are at risk from the property downturn and poorly performing stock market.
"This leaves them exposed to high risk and losses," said the report.
