Christie’s kick-starts London season sale with decent showing

Christie’s kick-started the London June sale season on Tuesday night with a decent showing, auctioning the most expensive of its collections but finding it tougher to sell middle-range offerings, according to a report in ARTINFO.

Of 44 lots offered, nine works fetched over £1m (€1.1m), 11 more than $1m (€708,114), and the final tally was £37.2m - just within the pre-sale projected territory of £36.8m to £50.1m.

The sale was dominated by European and UK-based bidders, who purchased 84% of the works on offer, as opposed to merely 14% US participation and 2% Asian.

Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
