Grooming for guys

If you have already had your summer holiday or are still desperately pining for your forthcoming break, why not treat yourself to some "reassuringly masculine" luxury at Gentleman's Tonic, a mix of traditional barbershop, spa, grooming and lifestyle services to suit every palate - and Brummell readers are entitled to a 10% discount on a range of treatments.

The Mayfair parlour is a fusion of traditional and contemporary styling: wood, leather and marble are mixed with high-tech music consoles and LCD screens in each haircutting station and treatment room. But you don't have to haul yourself over to the West End to pamper yourself - Gentleman's Tonic last month opened at The CityPoint Club, just behind Moorgate tube station and will open at private members club Eight later this summer.

Gentleman's Tonic is the brainchild of Olivier Bonnefoy, who worked in banking before making the break to set up his own business. He said: "The vast majority of men feel uncomfortable being in unisex, spa-like environments, as they are often intimidating, effeminate and minimalist. I decided to create an establishment that is comfortable, professional and yet in a relaxing environment, along with offering a range of products and services."

Bonnefoy sells his establishment as a "reassuringly masculine" antidote to the stress of city life offering "self-confidence for gentlemen". It offers all manner of treatments: shaving, hair styling, manicures, pedicures, facials, waxing and massage.

Special offer: 10% discount off barbershop, grooming and massages. Quote Brummell reader offer.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
