The world's hardest timepiece

Choosing how to spend tens of thousands of pounds on a watch is a process that should be conducted slowly, carefully and most importantly, with pleasure. At £35,000, the Urwerk 103.08 TiAIN is not for the faint-hearted. Coated with an alloy of titanium aluminium nitride, the 103.08 is the hardest watch ever made, yet is lighter than gold and platinum. The coating makes the underlying metal incredibly resistant to scratches, shocks, oxidation and even acid.

The Urwerk 103.08 TiAIN is the world's first watch to be treated with this magical alloy. As a comparison, gold has a hardness of 380 Vickers, steel 600 and TiAIN an extraordinary 3500 Vickers.

The time is indicated by the orbiting hour satellites as they pass the arc of the minutes. The slanting side of the hour satellites make sure that you can always see the time without turning the wrist.

Urwerk launched in 1997, by watchmaking brothers Felix and Thomas Baumgartner and artist Martin Frei and is based in Geneva.

The Urwerk 103.08 TiAIN is available from Marcus, 170 New Bond Street, London W1

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
