Barclays Wealth grows India equity research

Barclays Wealth has hired a head of equity research for its India operations as part of the bank's continuing growth in Asia.

Chokkalingam Gangatharan joins the UK bank from ENAM securities, a local broker, where he spent fifteen years in research.

He will be based in Mumbai and will report jointly into India’s head of investment and product office and chief investment officer, Ramachandran Krishnan, and Barclays Wealth’s head of research and investment strategy, Michael Dicks.

In this newly created role, Gangatharan will be responsible for Barclays Wealth’s team of equity research analysts in India and will work with the fund managers and relationship managers in India.

He will work with Krishnan to help build local equity research capability on the ground for Barclays Wealth across a variety of sectors and will focus on strengthening the small, mid and large-cap offerings.

Satya Bansal, chief executive Barclays Wealth in India said: “This will strengthen our local equity research capabilities and will help in creating stronger value propositions for our clients. "

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
