Barclays Wealth taps South Asian high net worth with hire

Barclays Wealth has bolstered its South Asian wealth management division with the hire of a new head, the latest in a string of appointments for its Asia private banking arm.

The wealth management arm of Barclays announced the appointment of Nitin Birla to head of South Asia and Hong Kong, as the latest move to tap the fast-growing pool of high net worth individuals in the region.

He will report to Sandeep Sharma, head of South Asia, who is based in Singapore.

Birla joins from RBS Coutts where he spent seven years, most recently as executive vice president in Hong Kong.

Before that, Birla spent six years building up Citibank’s non-resident indian business in Hong Kong, where he successfully established and led a team of relationship managers servicing NRI clients based in North Asia.

Over the last few weeks Barclays has been hriing aggressively to tap new clients in Asia. Last week the bank announced the hires of senior bankers Pheabe Chau in Singapore and Anny Au Yeung in Hong Kong.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
