Tilney exodus to Brown Shipley continues

Brown Shipley, the UK-based private bank, has hired its sixth banker from rival Deutsche Tilney - the the latest in a string of hires for its regional offices.

Gordon Campbell joins as a private client senior manager in the group's Birmingham office.

The hire will complement the team of five that Brown Shipley recruited from Deutsche Tilney's Midlands office in April. The five strong private client team are led by David Craig, who will join the team later this year as soon as his notice period has expired.

Earlier this month Brown Shipley hired senior banker Richard Moore from Adam & Co for its Manchester office. Just a week before the bank announced the launch of its new Edinburgh office, headed up by a duo from Deutsche Tilney.

Brown Shipley said in a statement that it anticipates the new Birmingham office will have £150m (€188m) funds under management within its first year, providing high net worth clients with discretionary managed investment portfolios, banking services, pensions, financial planning and fund management.

Deutsche Tilney declined to comment on the departure.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
