Julius Baer grows China private banking team

Julius Baer, the Swiss private bank, has hired a new director of its China business from HSBC.

Pauline Chung starts as managing director and market head in China. She will be based in Hong Kong and reports directly to Andrea Benenati, chief executive of North Asia.

She comes from HSBC where she was head of China for the private bank. Prior to this she was country team head for China at UBS for seven years.

Julius Baer said the greater China region continues to be an important growth area. The bank said: "Clients in the region are keen to explore opportunities with Julius Baer because of its recognised reputation of providing discrete services to ultra high net worth individuals."

Chung’s appointment follows another recent senior hire from HSBC. Anita Li joined as relationship manager for the China market; previously she had a similar role at HSBC private bank.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
