Heartwood hires Coutts head

Heartwood, the wealth management boutique, has hired a new head of investment communications from larger rival Coutts & Co, its second senior hire in a fortnight.

Giles Peel joins as head of investment communications, a newly created position. Peel will be responsible for communicating investment strategy, portfolio activity, market commentaries and economic views to Heartwood’s clients.

He will be based in the London office and will report to Noland Carter, chief investment officer.

He joins from Coutts, where he was head of investment communications. Before that, he was head of investment and product writing at Barclays Wealth.

Last month, Heartwood hired Kirsty MacArthur as a relationship director from UBS.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
