Investec Private Bank hires senior Coutts, Rothschild advisers

Investec Private Bank has strengthened its wealth management arm by hiring advisers from Lord Rothschild's Spencer House Capital Management and Coutts & Co, the UK private bank owned by Royal Bank of Scotland.

Catherine Kirchmann, who will look after clients in countries including South Africa, used to be a marketing associate at Spencer House, where she was responsible for business development, which has been affected by disappointing performance. She was previously a portfolo director at GAM London.

Jennifer Macintyre, who will focus on the UK, used to work for Coutts in London and Birmingham. She has worked in the wealth sector since 2002.

Investec's wealth division targets clients worth in excess of £3m. Each practitioner has an average of 25 relationships. The new recruits will report to Kim Hillier and Rob Gottlieb, joint heads of the division.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
