UBS hires Credit Suisse veteran for technology M&A

UBS has hired a Credit Suisse veteran to take advantage of the continued strength in technology mergers and acquisitions, Brian Webber, global head of technology banking at UBS, told Financial News.

John Metz will join the UBS investment banking department as managing director and head of US communications banking within the firm’s technology banking group. He worked at Credit Suisse for 10 years, in various roles within the firm’s technology banking team.

Webber said: “Given we were able to pick up one someone like John with his depth of relationships, it shows that we have established a culture that is an attractive work environment for senior level bankers.”

In his new role, Metz will be responsible for banking coverage for all sectors of technology communications including storage, networking, and data centre and communications infrastructure.

Webber said that UBS has been doing very well in cross border M&A, and is dominating the sector.

Over the last 24 months, the firm completed 16 deals totalling $12bn.

Webber said that in 2008 there is a $3bn fee pool, and that the mix of fees has been tilted toward overseas markets, particularly Asia and Europe.

“For 2009, we have a $4bn fee pool projected and are hoping to capture around 10% market share,” he said.

Credit Suisse declined to comment.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
