Coutts beefs up in Monaco with hire

Coutts, the world's second oldest private bank, has hired a senior private banker for its Monaco business to advise the bank's growing pool of clients, particularly wealthy British ex-pats in the region.

Alistair James joins after seven years at Lloyd's TSB Private Bank, where he was most recently senior business development manager. Previously he was a private banking international financial adviser at Lloyds, and spent seven years previously as a management consultant at Prudential.

Coutts is growing its client base in the region, well known for its tax benefits, to target British entrepreneurs and business professionals.

James Fleming, head of international private banking at Coutts said: "Coutts opened its Monte-Carlo office in July 2002 in response to Monaco's growing importance as an offshore centre for private banking, in addition to the Principality's unique appeal to the rich and famous."

He added: "There is an increasing number of ultra high net worth individuals and British expatriates drawn by Monaco's luxury lifestyle, the quality of its services and infrastructure and the favourable fiscal environment."

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
