Coutts hires banker for regional expansion

Coutts & Co. has appointed Simon Groom as a private banker to its office in Sheffield, the northern English city.

Groom joins from Gerrard, the private client group owned by Barclays, where he held various senior positions in the group’s Manchester office.

With the addition of Groom, the Sheffield office of Coutts now has seven employees.

Mark Yellops, senior manager, for Coutts in South Yorkshire/North Derbyshire said in a statement: The Coutts Sheffield office first opened in St Paul's Place in November 2006 in response to the growing number of wealthy clients in the area. South Yorkshire/North Derbyshire is now home to some 11,000 potential clients."

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
