Barclays Wealth team leaves for Standard Chartered

A team of three bankers from Barclays Wealth's Africa team have joined Standard Chartered Private Bank.

Susan Birch, former vice president in the international private banking team at Barclays Wealth, with a focus on Africa, has left to join her former boss Richard Howarth at Standard Chartered Private Bank, along with two other junior bankers from the Africa team.

Howarth left the UK wealth manager around two months ago for a role at Standard Chartered Private Bank in London.

He had been with Barclays Wealth for about four years and was director of the international private banking team.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
