Wealth adviser builds in Cayman

International wealth adviser Maitland has hired lawyers Magda Embury, Bernadette Carey and Angelina Whiteman as associates in its Cayman Islands office.

The three individuals will join the team headed by Sara Collins. Maitland, unrelated to the UK public relations company of the same name, has been operating in Cayman, the leading offshore jurisdiction for alternative investments, since September.

Magda Embury, who will help up finance and local business, is the best known of the new arrivals. She most recently headed up the property and banking division of Solomon Harris in Cayman, and has often ben named as a leading Cayman practictioner in legal directories, including Which Lawyer?

Carey has joined from Henry Davis York in Australia, where she specialised in commercial litigation. Whiteman joins from McMillan in Toronto. She will be part of the investment fund team.

Maitland administers assets worth $70 billion on behalf of international clients, plus 80 fund businesses. It has cross-border expertise in legal, trust, asset management and fund services, operating out of twelve offices, many of them in offshore locations.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
