Art collection stolen from private bank

Works of art worth several hundreds of thousands of euros have been stolen from a German private bank.

Thieves made off with works by well known German artists including Carl Spitzweg, Paula Modersohn-Becker and Gabriele Münter (pictured) at the Düsseldorf-based private bank Bankhaus Lampe.

A spokeswoman for the bank said a reward is on offer for information leading to the return of the works of art.

Reports in the German press said the police investigating the theft found no evidence of a break in at the private bank and were mystified at how it happened.

Bankhaus Lampe is owned by the Oetker Group, a holding company controlled by one of Germany’s wealthiest families.

Frank Sinatra had it about right: “It's very subtle, the Continental, because it does what you want it to do.” I had spent the morning driving down relatively busy A roads behind a Ferrari 599 but was perfectly happy that I had got the better of the deal. It’s no hardship being cocooned in the plush cockpit of a Bentley Continental GT Speed listening to John Humphrys detailing the latest travails of our benighted government.
