Julius Baer International shuffles management

Julius Baer International, a UK asset management subsidiary of the Swiss private bank, has promoted two staff and hired a third into its most senior positions as the chief executive steps aside, 16 months after taking on the role.

Julius Baer International, which caters to UK and international private clients, said Daniel Gerber has taken over as chief executive while Charlotte Vilén has become his deputy and Stuart Bates has joined from Credit Suisse as chief operating officer.

Juerg Berger, a longstanding employee of Julius Baer and a member of the board of directors of Julius Baer International, has stepped down from the position of chief executive to focus fully on his roles as board member and head of UK marketing. He had become chief executive last January.

Gerber had been appointed deputy chief executive of Julius Baer International in July after holding various corporate and client-facing management positions within the Julius Baer Group. He joined Julius Baer as head of fund distribution in 1999, having previously worked at Credit Suisse First Boston in Zurich and London.

Vilén joined Julius Baer International in 2001 as director of marketing in Europe and was named head of private clients and business development last year. She had spent five years at Credit Suisse Private Banking in London.

Bates was head of business control at Credit Suisse in London. He previously held various positions at Credit Suisse First Boston, Private Client Services in London, including that of business manager.

Brummel

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
