America’s wealthiest neighbourhoods revealed
Los Angeles County is home to more millionaire households than any other county in the US, with around 3% of America’s millionaire population, according to a survey by TNS, the market researcher.
Millionaire households, those with $1m-plus in net worth, not including their primary residence, increased by 5.9% from June 2006 to June 2007, reaching an estimated 9.9m, said the research.
There were 261,081 millionaires in Los Angeles, which includes wealthy neighbourhoods like Malibu, Bel Air and Beverly Hills. Twenty three per cent of California's millionaires reside in LA County, said TNS.
Second on the list was Cook County, Illinois, with 168,422 millionaires, followed by Maricopa County, Arizona with 126,394 millionaires.
West coast neighbourhoods dominated the list with five counties from the region comprising the top ten (four in California and one in Washington).
The other top ten in order were: Orange County, California (115,396); Harris County, Texas (107,513); San Diego County, California (100,727); King County, Washington (75,616); Santa Clara County, California (72,932); Nassau County, New York (71,869); and Suffolk County, New York (71,343).
Palm Beach, Florida, often cited as one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in America, did not make the top ten this year, after its ninth place in the last survey.
Most of America’s millionaires tend to be in their sixties, with the mean age being 66, and with an average net worth of $4.6m, according to TNS.
America’s wealthiest households said their single most important financial goal continues to be “assure a comfortable standard of living during retirement”.
