Multi-millionaire boutique launches new fund management initiative

Wheb Ventures, an investment boutique specialising in backing clean-tech companies and backed by Ben Goldsmith, is launching an asset management company and recruited two senior fund managers.

Wheb Asset Management will focus on listed sustainable investment opportunities and launch a sustainability fund managed by senior social responsible investment specialists Clare Brook and Nicola Donnelly.

Brook worked at Morley Fund Management where she launched and managed its SRI department. Donnelly joins from UBS, where she managed charitable foundation funds.

Wheb Ventures launched a clean energy fund last September, which raised more than £100m from wealthy and institutional investors.

Ben Goldsmith is the son of the late entrepreneur Sir James Goldsmith. He and his brother Zac have featured in the annual Wealth Bulletin’s eco-rich list for the last two years.

Ben Goldsmith is one of four Wheb partners. The others are James McNaught-Davis, who used to work for venture capital firms Warburg Pincus and Advent; Rob Wylie who worked for Shell and Rothschild; and Kim Heyworth, who was global chairman of KPMG Consulting.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
