Vestra hires duo from Barclays and Merrills

Vestra Wealth, the newly launched UK-based wealth manager, has hired two senior bankers from larger rivals Barclays Wealth and Merrill Lynch.

James O'Hegarty, a former divisional director in the Birmingham office of Barclays Wealth, has been hired as a partner at Vestra.

William Townrow joins as a relationship manager from Merrill Lynch. The two hires are the latest in a string of recent appointments by Vestra.

David Scott, managing partner at Vestra, said: “We have built our team of wealth managers, planners and relationship managers from across the industry in the effort to drive Vestra forward as a trusted and reliable Investment house through our people. There is a noticed change in the market, with investors looking to move their assets to smaller Investment Houses where the relationship with their Adviser is built on active management, communication and conviction.”

Vestra Wealth now has 15 investment managers based in London and has grown assets under management to £500m (€554m). It was founded last year by Scott, a former senior private banker at UBS.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
