Julius Baer hires UBS head for Munich office

Swiss private bank Julius Baer has hired a private banking veteran from UBS to head its new wealth management branch in Munich.

The new branch, opening in October, will be headed up by Volker Ruetzel. Ruetzel is joining Julius Baer from UBS in Munich, where he worked in private banking and was most recently the deputy branch manager.

He will be working with relationship managers Jürgen Wörl and Stefan Hansen.

Julius Baer has had a presence in Germany for 20 years and has branches in Frankfurt, Duesseldorf, Hamburg and Stuttgart.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
