Julius Baer expands in Switzerland

Julius Baer, the independent private bank, has opened a new office in Brig, Switzerland, as the bank eyes growth in its home market.

The new branch will be managed by Marcel Kalbermatter, who joins from larger Swiss peer UBS. At UBS Kalbermatter held a number of senior positions and was most recently head of its branch in Brig.

Kalbermatter will work with relationship managers Roger Petrig and Michele Massimi. He reports to Robert-Philippe Bloch, head of the region in South-Western Switzerland.

Brig is in the Valais region of Southwest Switzerland. The bank said the region has a thriving economy and many premier tourist destinations, including Zermatt, Saas-Fee and Leukerbad, which attracts large numbers of wealthy private individuals and entrepreneurs.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
