Credit Suisse 'superstar' Amine switches to New York

Bank shakes up investment banking leadership

Credit Suisse investment banking global co-head Jim Amine, one of the Swiss bank's London-based stars, will move to the US at the end of the year to focus on running the business in the Americas and Asia, while the chief executive of Credit Suisse's Italian business is coming to London to focus on Europe as Amine's global co-head.

Credit Suisse revealed the planned changes at the top of its investment banking team in a pair of memos to staff today by Paul Calello, chief executive of Credit Suisse's investment bank, and Eric Varvel, chief executive for Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Amine, who has been described as one of Credit Suisse's "superstars" by the Swiss group's top management, has been the London-based co-head of global investment banking since February last year alongside US-based co-head Marc Granetz.

Granetz is stepping down from the role after five years to become chairman of global investment banking from the start of next year to focus on client relationship and complex deal advisory work.

Amine will essentially take on Granetz's role by moving to New York, where he will focus on the Americas and Asia-Pacific regions, while oversight of Europe, Middle East and Africa business will pass to Luigi de Vecchi, who is moving from Italy to London to become co-head of global investment banking.

De Vecchi, a former Goldman Sachs banker who joined Credit Suisse in 2004, will retain his Italian role once the changes take place.

All three will report to Calello and Varvel. Credit Suisse declined to comment further.

Brummel

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
