Credit Suisse scoops private banking veteran from UBS

Swiss bank Credit Suisse has hired a 24-year private banking veteran from rival UBS for its ultra high net worth Individuals division.

Ian Dembinski starts as a managing director and UHNWI segment head for the UK and International, effective February 2010. He will be based in London and report to Blake Shorthouse, head of the UHNWI business in the EMEA region, and Mark Hirst, head of the market area UK and International for the EMEA private banking business.

Dembinski joins Credit Suisse after a 24 year career at UBS, where he was most recently head of the key client team, based in London.

During his tenure at UBS, he was also head of Nordic debt capital markets group, and head of the leisure sector team.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
