Coutts continues UK regional expansion

Coutts & Co. announced the opening of its Exeter office in the southwest of the UK as the latest in a string of regional expansions.

The new Exeter office opens with four private bankers and back office support.

In October, Coutts opened a branch in Cheltenham, and recently launched a team in the south east of England to cover Brighton and Hove.

This is the third wave of Coutts’ regional expansion programme, which has increased the number of private bankers working from its offices outside of London by almost 80% over the last four years - in some cases doubling local teams.

Mike Townsend, client partner for Coutts in Exeter said: “The counties of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset have long been home to millionaires seeing a rural life."

He said potential clients in the south west are typically entrepreneurs, company directors, landowners, partners in professional practises, or those from the world of sports and entertainment.

Relocation, relocation, relocation

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
