BNP Paribas seeks Qatari licence for private banking

BNP Paribas is considering the likelihood of acquiring a licence from the Qatar Financial Centre to provide private banking and trade finance among specialised portfolios, according to a report in Gulf Times.

Jean-Christophe Durand, the European banking major’s regional director for the Middle East, said, “We are working on a business plan to help us initiate certain activities from the QFC.”

A licence “is definitely an option before us”, Durand added, as cited in the Gulf Times report.

Banks have never been shy of firing staff at the merest whiff of a downturn. First the fat, then the muscle and finally the bone. In the past, cuts have been so deep that firms have found it hard to benefit when the markets rebounded, paying over the odds to restaff at speed. Such wild oscillations in staffing numbers are known as “doing a Merrill”.
